MOWEAQUA — Second year head coach Rachael Williams is look for improvement for her Central A & M cross country teams this season.
“This year we are a small but mighty team, who are brand new to high school cross country,” Williams said. “We have two freshman boys out for the team this year. Both ran cross country in middle school and seem to be on track for a good season this year. Several of our kids from last year went back to their main fall sport, and we graduated Brandon Escobedo and Victoria Billups.”
The coach is excited to get the 2021 campaign started.
“Last season was a great experience for me,” she said. “I had several experienced runners to help make my transition into cross country easier, as well as a few kids who came out because their other sports were put on pause due to COVID. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of hard working, fun kids to coach last fall. Our season went well with every- one making improvements and PRs throughout the season.”
Boys runner Griffin Adrian will be a strong runner for the team.
“He has had older siblings come through our program and worked out our the summer with them. It has showed this first week of practice,” Williams said.
Other runners she has high hopes for are Griffin and Tommy Jenkins.
“I am looking forward to seeing them compete in meets,” she said. “It is hard to mentally prepare as a freshman for the competition that we will face when there isn’t any upperclassman to challenge you in practice. I think both boys will have a good season.”
