The boys golf team at Taylorville High School welcomes some new faces to the team and third-year Head Coach Paul Millburg expects good results.
“We have some new faces this year, four seniors, new to golf, who decided to come out,” Millburg said. “Bryce Friedrich, Luke Markwell, Dylan Brown and Tucker Tippitt are the seniors. Seniors are leaders and help the team in many ways. I look forward to working with them.”
Three seniors were lost to graduation, including Jonah Nagle, Tate Wagner and Mike Wells.
“Last year was as good as expected, I was happy that we had nearly a ‘normal’ season,” Millburg said.
But the coach is not looking through his rear view mirror. He has his sights set on this new crop of Tornadoes.
“Obviously our leader is Briar Dempsey,” he stated. “The team this season will be built around Briar as our anchor. He has been work- ing on his game in the off season, and it has been showing a lot at practice.”
Other players the coach is counting on are Ryan Johnson, who is looking to a successful season. Underclassmen Grant Buschon and Brandon Hefner will compete for a starting position the coach said.
“Brandon Hefner and Grant Buschon are juniors with experience and Brian Short is a junior,” Millburg said. “Zander Frye is a sophomore and could make the cut to be on the varsity.”
As to an important match he’s looking forward to, the coach feels they are all important.
“With such a short season, every match is important,” he said. “We’ve hosted our Taylorville Invitational on August 12 and will host the regionals at the end of the season.”
