The Tornadoes girls golf program is entering its second official season with 4 returning letterwinners from a team that finished 8- 13 a year ago.
“I really didn’t know what to expect last year,” head coach Jeff Hill said. ” We were entering foreign terri- tory with a touch schedule against every team with more match experience.”
The four returnees are headed by junior Sophia Robinson. Robinson basically lives at the Tornadoes home course Lakeshore Golf Course according to Hill. She is so very dedicated playing almost every day. Her summer highlight was a hole-in-one at #13 at Lakeshore. Seniors Mattie Anderson and Morgan Wright return to help bolster the Tornadoes top five, as both vastly improved last season by as many at 10 o 15 shots per contest. Both were in the top tier at the Apollo Conference meet along with Robinson. The fourth letter winner is junior Kadee Prose. Prose also improved from her initial season of golf.
The bright spot for the Tornadoes is the addition of four underclassmen playing golf for the first time. Sophomore Hallie Lowis and freshmen Sydney Lowis, Laura Wayman and Avery Ellis.
With only one week of practice under their belts before the first match the ladies are working hard to improve all facets of their game on the practice range, putting green and on the course. “My goal for each of the Tornadoes girls is to improve their match total by one stroke per contest,” stated Hill. “That may seem far out, but it is a goal that gives each individual something to aim for during the course of the season.”
Taylorville will play their biggest schedule so far with many triangular and quad- rangular contests as well as a handful of dual matches. The Tornadoes will only have two home matches against Rochester on
September 8 and Shelbyville on September 27. Those contests begin at 4:30 p.m. at Lakeshore and are open to the public. This year’s Apollo Conference meet is at Mattoon’s Meadowview Golf Course on September 20.. That meet begins at 8:30 a.m.
