Breese-Courier Writer TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Tornadoes set their season in motion opening at Dolph Stanley Court Thursday night. It was Purple versus Purple battling the Shelbyville Rams for Taylorville’s Senior Night. The Tornadoes would take the night sweeping the Rams in two games, 25-12, 25-13. Before the game, all 6 sen- iors – Kennedie Cearlock, Hannah Clayton, Summer Brandis, Abby Heberling, Abbie Clayton and Emma Pennock – were escorted by their parents onto the court. With all the emotions pouring out at once they enjoyed the moment they had before the game before getting in the zone for the match ahead. Starting off the year with a bang, the West Gym was electric. The players were pumped up Thursday night. With Purple Reign and the Taylorville crowd fueling the Tornadoes for game one, the ball is served and things get started.
Busting it open early the Tornadoes jump out to a 10-5 lead. Senior to senior, Summer Brandis sets Hannah Clayton up for the beautiful kill. Brandis would end the competition with 17 assists. With a few blocks from senior Abby Heberling the Tornadoes would go on to take game one, 25-12.
Head Coach Kim Peabody talks about how this group of seniors have played along side each other since 7th grade. “They have great chemistry and that’s a big reason they have been successful all these years.” said Peabody.
Shelbyville served it off to Taylorville to begin the second match. With momentum on their side, the Tornadoes jump out to another lead early in the contest. Senior Emma Pennock getting in on the action with a deadly kill to the Shelbyville side. Bouncing back from minor miscommunication is no easy feat, but with the teamwork and focus of these Tornadoes, they did exactly that.
Remaining as calm as can be, everyone watching could tell they have been waiting for this day, finishing the second game, 25-13 and taking home the first win of the season.
Next up for the Tornadoes are the Rochester Rockets on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021. The match is at Rochester.
