TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Optimist Club held its regular meeting on Thursday, August 26, 2021, in the community room of the People’s Bank. James Adcock, Secretary/treasurer, called the meting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance, with Pastor Steve Robinson giving the morning invocation. Upcoming events for the club will include the Fall fundraiser, the mostaci- olli dinner which will be held in October. Funds raised by this event will be used to help support our annual “Christmas for Kids” in December.
Guest speaker for the morning was former THS student, Kelsey (Coker) Daniels. Since graduating from THS, Kelsey has earned degrees from Illinois State University, Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (Dallas, Texas), and her doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn.). Her career path has led her to International Linguistics and Development (ILAD). Here she is helping to educate people who may speak a language where as few as 600 people may speak it as their native tongue. Kelsey emphasized how difficult it is for people such as this to communicate in today’s world. The seemingly simple task of reading and writing for someone who has such a limited group can be an almost insurmountable task.
ILAD consists of four core competencies:
– Literacy
– Language technology
– Agriculture
– Business development
The Optimist Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at the People’s Bank. All board members are encouraged to attend as plans for upcoming events will be finalized. As always, visitors and guests are welcome to attend any regular meeting of the Taylorville Optimist Club. Meetings currently are being held on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 7:00 AM at the People’s Bank Community Room.
