TAYLORVILLE —Now in its fourth season, the Pana Junior High School baseball team won its first-ever Class 3A IESA Regional Tournament in Taylorville, 7-1, over the host school. Pana heads to the Sectional at Clinton on Saturday to face Tolono-Unity with game time to be announced. Members of the team are, Ace Henschen and Jax Czaikowski, laying near the regional trophy. TAYLORVILLE — The third time proved to be the charm for the Pana Junior High School base- ball team on Monday afternoon. After two straight losses in IESA Class 3A Regional championship games, the Panthers broke through and won its first-ever title with a 7-1 win over Taylorville at Taylorville. Three Pana pitchers combine to no-hit the Terriers.
Leading 1-0 after the first inning, the Panthers opened the game up with a 4-run third inning. Taylorville got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third, but Pana held a 5-1 lead. Another pair of runs in the top of the sixth sealed the victory, 7-1.
Dane Epley was the starting pitcher and went 3 innings, not allowing a hit while striking out 5. . He was relieved by Madyx Angel and Easton Malisia mopped things up for Pana on the mound.
Pana had 10 hits in the game and were aided by 9 Taylorville errors. Parker Moore was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Malisia had 2 base hits and drove in 2 runs.
Carder Burris also had 2 base hits. Jax Czaikowski tripled in the game.
Pana is now 8-6 on the season and will face Tolono-Unity, a 10-0 winner over Charleston in their regional final, on Saturday in the Clinton Sectional. Game time is yet to be determined.
