TAYLORVILLE—Taylorville vs Pana. Panthers vs Tornadoes. Battle for Route 29. Whichever you like to call it, the rivalry matchup took place Monday night. The volleyball match was held in the west gym at Taylorville High School, pit- ting two highly skilled volleyball teams against one another. Unfortunately, there could only be one winner and that was the home team, 25-12, 25-18.
Pana served to Taylorville and game 1 was set in motion. Abby Heberling returns the ball with a smooth kill to begin the game, 1-0. Scrappy play seemed to work for Pana though, sticking with Taylorville through 4 scores.
Pana senior Jillian Hamilton had 7 kills in the two games. She also had 3 digs. Facilitating for the Panthers was senior Rachel Holthaus with 11 assists and 1 kill.
After the first few scores, Taylorville took off with victory in mind. Seniors Abby Heberling and Hannah Clayton were at the helm for the Tornadoes. The pair combined for 18 kills in the match. While Clayton and Heberling were outseeking kills, Summer Brandis did the passing for Taylorville. She finished the night with 23 assists. The senior also had 8 service points, 2 of which were aces. Junior Sophie Mizeur had 8 service points, 2 being aces. One of those aces ended game one with a wicked serve by Mizeur, 25-12.
Game two began a little closer and Taylorville didn’t relinquish control. Pana’s efforts seemed in vein as they could not keep up with the fast pace of the Tornadoes.
Mazzie Flemming joined in adding a block and a kill to the Taylorville onslaught. Elle Richards tacked on 5 kills, 2 blocks and 2 service points. Senior Hannah Clayton had a brilliant dig to keep Taylorville alive long enough to get the game two match point and securing the victory on the night.
Both teams will defend their home against conference opponents tonight as Pana takes on Vandalia Vandals and Taylorville battles rival Lincoln Railsplitters.
