THS falls short to of victory Granite City on opening night, 54-46 final

TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville boys basketball team opened up regular season play on Monday night. The Tornadoes hosted Granite City for their home opener. The Warriors got the best of the Taylorville boys team, taking the match by a final score of 54-41.

The excitement was swirling in the West Gym on Monday night. After a Taylorville JV boys 50-38 victory, the entire home town crowd were ready to see the Tornadoes play the first 2021 official varsity basketball game on the Dolph Stanley court. Senior leaders Bryce Friedrich and Kamren Heimsness burst through the Tornado banner eager to get the game started.

Friedrich wins the opening tip off over the Warriors. Heimsness gets to the foul line and etches in the first basket for the Tornadoes 2021 season. He went on to notch 17 points and five boards.

Granite City answers back with seven unanswered points giving them the 7-1 edge. Senior Luke Markwell helps climb the Tornadoes back into the drivers seat. Markwell finished the night with seven points and two rebounds.

As the time ticked down in the second quarter Heimsness took over. The small forward sparked a ten point Taylorville run.

Going into halftime down ten, 30-20, the Tornadoes and Warriors match was anyones game for the taking.

The first to score for Taylorville in the second half was big man Bryce Friedrich. Showing off the power of his post moves. The 6’3” forward finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

Will Bitschenauer made three triples adding to 11 total points.

A late game 45-35 score the visiting team had the edge over the Tornadoes. They would be able to climb back but could not stop the Warriors inching offense. Granite City comes away with the 54-46 win over their hosting Tornadoes. The Taylorville boys basketball team will travel to Bethalto to take on Civic Memorial tonight on Tuesday night. The Tornado vs Eagles game will start at 7:30.
