After an unfulfilling 6-6 end to last season, graduating four key players and battling season ending injuries the 2021-’22 Lincolnwood Lancers look to defy adversity with senior and junior guards leading the charge.
Two of the top scorers from last season, Will Jenkins and Braden Whalen, earned captain roles for the Lancers. The senior and junior duo look to continue their offensive tear once again this season. Both players are already stepping up on both sides of the ball which will be vital to the teams success.
This years sophomores, who brought with them many achievements to the junior varsity level last year, contribute to the varsity teams all-around play.
As for the Lancer’s team goals Head Coach Matt Millburg says it is “just like any year…”
“Our goals are to be a strong and competitive 1A team. Competing for a conference championship, competing in the strong New Berlin and Waverly tournaments, and winning a regional championship will always be on our radar.”
Millburg also mentions the Lancer’s placement in the MSM conference.
“All MSM conference games are competitive in our area. Winning on the road is especially tough year to year. Because last year, not all the teams played against each other. Having a clear front-runner is tough.”
The MSM conference is home to teams such as Edinburg, Nokomis and South Fork just to name a few.
The beginning of the year a challenge trying to fill the holes and just getting the chemistry back in action but once they can get their groove back and gel together the Lincolnwood boys basketball team is going to be an exciting team to watch. The core is young but still has enough leadership from upperclassmen to make the team viable for a deep post season run as Millburg explains.
“We have some injuries we are dealing with early on however we hope it will make us stronger down the stretch. Starting the season with our first seven games on the road will be challenging as well. We hope that with all we are facing, those experiences, will make us extremely competitive in post season play.”
