Tornado basketball team is headed to State with win over Bulldogs

TAYLORVILLE — We’re going to state!” Head Coach Doug Bowsher excitedly says after the Wednesday night matchup . The now 23-2 7th grade girls basketball team hosted Mahomet-Seymour Sectional Championship. They defeated the Bulldogs by a final score of 26-20 with a huge rally coming after the second half.

Sticking together it was a fairly even matchup for the first two quarters. It was Mahomet-Seymour who had the slight edge going into halftime up 10-8 on the Tornadoes.

“This group.” explains Bowsher. “I knew if it came down to the wire that we would be in good shape.”

This Taylorville team has heart and the hustle to prove it. After a Gianna Tarr injury just before halftime it was apparent these girls were playing for something much bigger than a sectional championship trophy.

“Tonight, one of the players go down other teammates step up. It’s this group.” Bowser says.

The mid-fourth quarter is when the team really stepped up and put the game away. Going up and ensuring they kept the lead to the end. Grace Rogers lead scoring for Taylorville with 11 points with Hope Kietzman not too far behind with 5 points of her own. Josephine Durbin, Mykynlee Siempelkamp, Nora Thomas and Leah Lovekamp all had a combined 10 point. The final buzzer sounded and the Tornadoes were on top, 26-20. The junior high student section stormed the court. Emotions were flowing and smiles were very much present.

The Taylorville 7th grade team will pack up and take the three hour journey to Bolingbrook Illinois where they will participate in the round robin state tournament. Their first game will begin at 2:30 and will be against Barrington Station.
