ILLINOIS – Golden Apple, a non-profit committed to preparing, supporting and mentoring aspiring teachers, is now accepting applicants for its Accelerators program class of 2022, the program’s third cohort. The Accelerators program is a 15 month teacher residency and licensure program that expedites the preparation of highly-effective teachers in areas-of-need throughout the state, particularly in southern, central and western Illinois. Accelerators, launched in June 2020, recruits career changers with bachelor’s degrees and college seniors not enrolled in teacher preparation programs to help address Illinois’ teacher shortage crisis and fill critical positions throughout the state.
Participants obtain a teaching license within 15 months and receive a stipend of up to $25,000 to apply to coursework and living expenses. As they pursue a teaching license, participants take courses at a partner university, receive instruction from award-winning educators, and work with mentors who provide ongoing support throughout the school year. To learn more and/or apply for the program, interested parties can visit: www.goldenapple.org/accelerators.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a spotlight on just how critical it is to have highly-effective, talented teachers in the classroom, but unfortunately too many of our students do not have these kinds of educators,” said Alan Mather, President of Golden Apple. “Our Accelerators Program is a way to train and place aspiring teachers into classrooms across our state — which is why it’s so important that we are opening applications for our third cohort. Our first class of Accelerators, who entered classrooms as full-time teachers this fall, have already become invaluable members of their communities and we look forward to placing more Accelerators in their own communities that need them in the years to come.”
The inaugural cohort of Accelerators began full-time teaching this fall in school districts through southern, central and western Illinois. The second cohort of Accelerators started their training in June 2021, and will begin teaching in the fall of 2022.
