7th grade girls are headed to the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!
BOLINGBROOK — The 7th Grade Taylorville girls basketball team is advancing to the State Championship! After Quarterfinal and Semifinals. Both wins taking place in Bolingbrook Illinois.
The first game the Tornadoes battled the then undefeated Barrington Station. Both teams struggled to get going in the first with a combined 7 points. The struggle did not last long however, as the Tornadoes took off like a rocket and found a way to reach double digit points in each of the remaining three quarters. The Tornadoes took the game by a final score of 33-22. Grace Rogers lead the team in scoring for the Quarterfinal matchup with Hope Kietzman just behind at 11 points.
With the Tornadoes on a hot scoring streak it was going to be difficult for any team to slow their roll. Their next opponent looked to be the undefeated Lockport Oak Pairie. Following their intimidating 39-8 win over Willowbrook Westview Hills in the First Round. The match was set and slated to be an entertaining one.
Taylorville was less consistent with their scoring but out-scored their opponent when it mattered most, 2nd quarter and 4th quarter. It wouldn’t be the playoffs without a neck and neck game. The Semifinals game came down to the wire. It was the Taylorville Tornadoes finishing ahead, 28-25. The girls were on top of their game with having not miss a single free throw, going 5-5. Leading scorer was McKynlee Siempelkamp with 14 points in the game. Grace Rogers notched 5, Nora Thomas earned 4 points with Gianna Tarr and Josephine Durbin had a combined 7 points in the Saturday game.
There have been only four Taylorville teams since 1979 that have placed 2nd in the State playoffs, 2003, 1998, 1994 and 1992. However, the 7th grade team has never won a State Title.
The State Championship game, against Morton JHS, will be held on Thursday, Dec 9th.
