(MATTOON) — On Tuesday night, the Pana High School boys basketball team traveled to Mattoon where they picked up a 67-53 non-conference win over the Green Wave. It was Pana’s 12th straight victory of the season.
Brenden Schoonover led the way as he poured in 22 points. Devon Peebles added 16 and Colin Schmitz added a dozen. Kyle Kuhn had 6 and Max Lynch chipped in with 5 points. Drew Hackler finished with 4 points and rounding out the scoring was Evan Hudlin with 2 points.
Pana sank 6 3-point baskets in the contest while Mattoon had 10. They only got 9 2-point point baskets.
In free throws, there were a total of 5 for both teams in the game. Pana was 1-of- 2 with Schoonover the only free throw shooter. For
the Green Wave, they were 3-of-3.
Pana got out of the gate with a 15-8 first quarter lead and extended the margin to 14 points, leading 38-24. Going into the final 8 minutes, the Panthers were up 55-33.
Sophomore Andrew Wentzel and junior Christian Larson led the Green Wave with 12 points apiece. Wentzel got all of his points in the fourth quarter, sinking 4, 3-point baskets.
Pana, 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the South Central Conference, will take the long road trip over to Piasa to face the Southwestern Birds on Friday, Jan. 7. It’s back-to-back road games for the Panthers as they take off for the other side of the state to face Newton in non-conference action on Saturday, Jan. 8.
