TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Optimist Club held its regular meeting on Thursday, January 13, 2022, in the community room of the People’s Bank. President John Crist called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Pastor Steve Robinson with the morning prayer.
A brief report on upcoming activities was presented by Terry Wright. Those included the Southern Regional Oratorical Contest which will be held on Saturday, April 9th, in the Bank’s meeting room, and the Annual Salute to Law Enforcement Breakfast which will be held in the Month of May. Jim Adcock reported on a communication received from the Scotty Canale Scholarship winner, Macey Westrick. Macey is doing well attending SIU-E, where she is active in several programs outside of her academic schedule. The Optimist Club is very proud to help support graduating seniors of THS in furthering their education while remembering one of our outstanding former members, Scotty Canale. Scotty was a leading member of the club and served as the Illinois District Governor as well.
Bruce Blanshan , Executive Director of the Christian County YMCA, was the guest speaker for the morning. Bruce has returned to the Y after an absence of several years, taking over at a time of much activity at the facility. Currently, the Y is undergoing some maintenance issues which are much needed improvements. This project should be completed soon, and things should return to normal at that time. Bruce also talked about the many different activities and programs available to the membership. Also, at this time, new memberships are being offered with no activation fee (a savings of $50) and 10% off the first months dues. Bruce says that the Y has added 26 new members since the first of the year.
The Christian County YMCA has been in existence since 1980. If offers many physical fitness opportunities, a wellness center, an indoor track, swimming pool & water aerobics classes, basketball, racket ball and more. A special feature of the Y is the 24 hour access. Members may use the facility on their own schedule by using their key fob to gain access.
The next scheduled meeting for the Optimist Club is Thursday, Jan 27th, where the scheduled speaker will be Blake Davis of Edward Jones. Blake will offer us a financial fitness report for the new year. The Optimist welcome visitors and are always seeking new members. If you have any questions regarding the club, it’s goals, or how you can join, just contact any member or call 827-5978.
