Breeze-Courier Sports Editor The semi-final game of the 55th annual Litchfield Invitational pitted the Panthers from Pana against the Nokomis Redskins. A very physical and defensive game both teams had quick steals and plenty of blocks. But Pana was too much for Nokomis in the end taking the match 44-38 and moving onto the championship game.
The win over Nokomis was
the third one in three weeks for the Panthers – two in tournaments and one regular season game.
Defense was a recurring theme throughout the first half. It was an even match with neither team wanting to budge and allow the other to catch fire.Taking things nice and slow the Redskins felt good going into halftime but the Panthers were still lurking.
The match ramped up in the second half. Like a bomb exploded inside both teams the offense really started producing but so did the fouls. Seniors Brenden Schoonover (14 points), Colin Schmitz (8 points) and Drew Hackler (5 points) reached the line along with junior Devon Peebles (12 points). Senior forward Kyle Kuhn played a part in the well oiled offensive machine. He finished with 5 points. They caught the lead late in the third and would not give it up despite the last minute push from junior Elijah Aumann and the Redskins.
The Pana Panthers move on to the championship round on Saturday night to face the Mattoon Greenwave.
