Dear Editor,
For the past several years, it has been my pleasure to represent the Taylorville Optimist Club as the program chairman for our “Respect for Law Month” each May. Six years ago, I began our “Salute to Law Enforcement Breakfast”, which has gained great acceptance from law enforcement and the community in general.
I feel the time has come to speak out against the radicals, the media, and the politicians that support defunding and denigrating the brave men and women of law enforcement. The outstanding work of the police far outweighs the minimal incidents of bad behavior , but that is what the media uses to misinform the public and further divide the country.
Today, I would like to call on our mayor and city council to designate the fourth Thursday of May as the official “Salute to Law Enforcement Day”. I would also like to encourage other communities to do the same, and our County Board to join in this effort. If enough attention is drawn to this event, perhaps the movement will continue to grow across the state.
If you display the American flag at your home or business, perhaps you could get a “Thin Blue Line American Flag” to display on that day. If you would like to join in this effort, please contact me at terry@oijgc.org, and I will help you get set up with everything you need.
Terry Wright, Taylorville
