Joann D. Garner

Joann D. Garner 91 of Taylorville, passed away at 6:14a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. She was born on September 24, 1930 in Taylorville, the daughter of Wayne and Dolores (Wanack) Smith. She married Charles J. Garner on Easter Sunday in 1952 at the Taylorville Christian Church. He preceded her in death on May 10, 2020. Joann worked as a nurse for 35 years for Dr. Paul Hagan. Following that time she spent 15 years as the Director of the WIC program. She was a member of the Davis Memorial Christian Church. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She was a talented crafter, especially knitting, crocheting, and painting. Over the years she used her gifts to help others by creating hats for babies, chemotherapy patients, and helmet liners for the troops among many other projects. She especially enjoyed her monthly breakfast club gatherings with her classmates and former coworkers.

She is survived by her daughter: Susan Jackson (Alan); grandson: Blake Garner Jackson (Melanie); and great granddaughter: Charlotte Jackson all of Taylorville; nephews: Mike Smith (Dawn) and Greg Smith (Theresa) both of Huntsville, Alabama, Kirk Danko (Beth) of Maryville, Missouri, and Troy Danko (Julie) of Dallas, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister: Corene Smith-Danko; and brother: David Smith.

Mrs. Garner will be cremated, and a graveside inurnment service will take place at 11:00a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville with Rev. Tom Bellegante officiating.
