TAYLORVILLE — Mrs. Thorpe, a 3rd grade teacher at Memorial Elementary, read Charlotte’s Web to her students and wanted them to experience the animals in real life. Mrs. Thorpe contacted Taylorville FFA and asked if they would be willing to bring some piglets and sheep to show her students. FFA member Abby Norris thought this would be a great project for her Agriculture Education SAE. Abby got in contact with Mrs. Thorpe and the Memorial Principal, Mrs. Reiss to plan this event. Fellow FFA member, Ben Wamsley with a Sheep Placement SAE brought sheep from his farm to use. No piglets were available at this time, but we still thought the sheep would be a fun learning experience. On Thursday, April 10th Abby, Ben, Abby Erlenbush, Hannah Hartwig, and Advisor Ms.King traveled to Memorial Elementary to bring the sheep. The students listened to a short lesson about the animals and then were allowed to pet them. 3rd grade students came out 2 classes at a time for 20 minute periods. According to Mrs. Thorpe, “ Thank you for allowing your students to come to Memorial 3rd grade. The students will remember Toby and Grandma for years to come.” Our FFA Members loved visiting Memorial and hope to continue to work with them in the future.
