TAYLORVILLE — Head Coach Hayden Eldred and they Taylorville girls soccer team have a fresh and exciting outlook on the 2022 season. Being his second year under the title Head Coach he is learning just as much as the girls are. Teaching the players fundamentals, good sportsmanship and the love of the game is his prerogative.
The Taylorville High School started the program back up five years ago. Eldred began as the assistant coach under Jordan Andruch in the 2017-’18 season. Andruch and THS parted ways after the canceled 2020 season and that made room for the assistant to become the head.
Eldred played soccer when he was younger and says he thoroughly enjoys the sport. Head Coach Eldred is more focused on fundamentals and is patient knowing the wins will come. This is his second season as Head Coach in the fifth season of the Girls soccer program.
The team is lead by two senior captains who have the most soccer experience, Kennedie Cearlock and Mia Dorton. The two have been apart of the program since their freshman year and will be fantastic role models to any teammate that needs any kind of wisdom.
Abbie Clayton and Ella Greene will be the other Tornado leaders on the team. The two are less experienced than the captains but still bring their seniority and guidance to the squad.
There are two juniors on the team, Gabby Kelm and Torie Johnson-Pratt, but as for the rest of the team new faces are everywhere. Plenty of new and young players with varied experience remain focused on improvement.
“We are fairly young and a little inexperienced but we’re just trying to get better every day.” said Eldred.
There are four sophomores and seven freshman on the THS girls soccer team. Freshman Zettie Colbrook is getting her needed varsity goalie experience following in her sister, Rozella Colbrook’s, footsteps.
The team hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts being shut out in their first 6 matches of the season. They sit at 0-7 and still have yet to put up any points on the board but remain optimistic and oh so patient.
“It’s been a rough start but we’re just looking to progress any and every day.” commented Taylorville Head Coach “But we’re looking to change that and turn it around.”
No matter what this year brings the 2022 spring season will be a fun and learning year for the THS girls soccer team. Don’t count out their ability to give it their all every single game.
“This group works hard. They’re inexperienced but doing their best.”
