EDINBURG — The Edinburg Board of Education was barely able to hold a meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, with the four present Board members managing to form a quorum. Corey Hunsley, Aaron Beck, Adamn Leedy, and Julie Peacock represented the district in a meeting that started 21 minutes late at 6:21 p.m.
After announcing the end of testing season for the year and a desire to look into new science curriculum and a wireless scoreboard system, the Board went into closed session at 6:30 p.m. after having only 9 minutes of open session. After exiting closed session, the Board was happy to announce the new hires for the district.
The Board approved to hire John Yeakel for the high school math position, Christy Pentzien for the high school english position, Taylor Strom as the Guidance Counselor, and John Byran as the senior sponsor. Though hiring for the pre-k position was on the agenda, the Board had to table that motion because a Board member needed to abstain from the vote and t here were not enough members to then have a majority.
In sadder news, long time and much beloved educator Jennifer Tracey informed the Board of her intent to retire at the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year. Educator Drew Woodruff also informed the Board of his intent to retire at the end of the 2023-24 school year.
Like many school districts in the area, Edinburg has been playing it by ear with the budget for the district. Superintendent Ben Theilen asked the Board for permission to set a resolution to move funds from the district working cash account to the Tort Fund, which he knew was going to be short this year. The Board approved his request to move $60,000, and also scheduled the Budget Hearing needed for June 15 at 5:45 p.m. before the regularly scheduled meeting at 6:00 p.m.
The district has also been tweaking it’s current year calendar and the upcoming school year calendar to try and make way for the E-learning days once the state signaled what schools could use them for. The Board approved t he amended FY2022 calendar and the FY23 calendar at the meeting.
The next regular meeting of the Edinburg Board of Education will be held on Wednesday, June 15 at 6:00 p.m.
