Dear Editor,
Heartland Greenway placed a full-page ad in the Breeze-Courier on Sunday, May 15 in an effort to assure the public that their project is safe for all of us. The ad makes four references to the monitoring wells that will be placed to “ensure that no CO2 is migrating up from the storage zone” or that “there is no impact to local water resources.” The very fact that monitoring wells are required is evidence that the escape of CO2 is a potential problem. You only monitor things that you anticipate will be problems. Monitoring wells cannot “ensure” that there will be no escape. They can only detect leaks when they have already occurred! Monitoring wells are not a lock on the barn door. They are only the alarm that alerts you that the horse is already out of the barn!
Sincerely,
Lonnie W. Yeaman
