TAYLORVILLE – Eight graduating seniors – two each from Taylorville, Hillsboro, Litchfield and Pana High Schools – recently were awarded $1000 checks toward their continuing education in Taylorville Community Credit Union’s eighth annual “Stop. Shop. VOTE!” Scholarship promotion. This year’s winners from Pana High School are:
Jaxon will attend SIU-Edwardsville to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Hayden will first attend Lakeland College for an Associates’ degree in Human Services, and then pursue a Bachelors degree in Sociology at a 4-year university.
“Congratulations to these scholarship winners, and to all area students who plan to continue their education,” says TCCU President, Will Perkins. “We at TCCU are proud to offer this program too our area students and to assist them in the pursuit of their educational and professional goals.
“And we express our thanks to the dozens of local businesses, and the hundreds of area residents, for their continued support of the scholarship program.”
Perkins points out that 17 Pana businesses participated this past year, giving residents plenty of locations to shop and vote. “Just in Pana businesses, there were 2220 ballots filled out, resulting in a total of 9,349 votes cast.
“Those figures reflect a considerable amount of money being spent in our local community, as shoppers can cast one vote for every $10.00 they spend in a participating business.”
Any graduating senior at the four high schools who plans to continue their education – whether at a trade school, 2-year community college or 4-year university – is eligible to participate, Perkins points out. Winners are determined by votes cast at participating businesses displaying the promotional posters and ballots.
Pana businesses that participated this year include: A-1 Furniture Wholesale, Anarchy, Countryside Campers, Cutz ‘n Curls, Eleven 11, Hair Razors, Holthaus Appliances, Locked & Loaded, Nohren’s Hardware, Outdoor Power Source, Pana Bowl, Pana Save A Lot, Pizza Man, Rack Attack Archery, Spring Garden Restaurant, Station 502 Pub / Pizza and SuperStarz Tanning.
Registration for the 2022-23 Scholarship Program will begin in August, following resumption of classes at the high schools. Students will be able to register through Friday, October 14. To register, students simply provide TCCU with their name and photo, and a signed Parental Permission slip. The students’ photos will be used on promotional posters. Anyone who has a student – or who knows a student – who will be a senior for the 2022-23 school year and who plans to continue their education, is encouraged to make sure that student registers with the new school year.
