Pana Junior High School track team has state champ
Athletes from Pana Junior High School had a great showing at this past weekends Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) boys and girls junior high school track meet held in East Peoria. One eighth grade girls was state champion in one event and was runner-up in a second one.
Reagan McGlauchlen, daughter of Eric and Kendra, won the Class 3A shot put event with a heave of 31-feet, 9-1/2 inches. In addition, McGlauchlen was runner-up in the discus throw as she threw the disc 95-feet, 11-inches even.
Also fininishing runner-up was the eighth grade 4 x 400-meter relay team of Clayton Coleman, Parker Moore, toby Stephens and Gaven Bland. They recorded a 3:52.28 time. Riley Durbin was the alternate for the team.
Moore also won medal for his fifth place finish in the eighth grade high jump competition. He cleared the bar at five-feet, eight inches.
At the seventh grade level, in the 7-3A 4 x 100-meter relay, the team of Brooke Stauder, Bella Bennett, Shelby Brown and Lilly Jostes had a time of 56.52 seconds to finish sixth in the state.
The Pana High School boys track team are sending five athletes to state in five different events. They qualified during the IHSA Sectional held at Tuscola on Wednesday, May 18.
Austin “Sky” Henschen punched his first ticket to state in long jump with a meet best of 22-feet, 7-1/2 inches. He is two inches away from breaking the school record. The senior then finished first in the 100 meters with a time of 11.23 seconds while Carter Beyers finished second with a time of :11.26.
At pole vault, Griffin Kimbrel finished second place with a vault of 13-feet, 7-inches. This is 17 inches over the state qualifying standard.
Moving on to relays, the boys 4×100 of Carter Edwards, Ethan Hicks, Carter Beyers and Henschen ran for the first time together and they finished second.
Finally, Henschen put on one last show in the 200 meters. He ran a :22.46 with a second place finish and is now going to state in four events.
The boys ended the night with a third place team finish and had a total of 12 sectional medals. Senior Sam Holthaus medaled in three events including fifth in high jump; fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Lastly, senior Alex Rodgers had a personal record in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:14.27.
The Panthers will compete at the IHSA Class 2A State Track and Field competition in the preliminaries on Thursday. Finals in all four classes take place on Saturday, May 28, at O’Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
