Annual Taylorville Memorial Day ceremony Monday

TAYLORVILLE — The annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery will be held Monday, May 30, 2022 at 10 a.m.

The Master of Ceremonies for this year’s event is Gwen Diehl and she will kick start the event, followed by the Taylorville Municipal Band playing the National Anthem. Beverly Walker, VFW Post 4495 Chaplain will give the invocation, followed by the recognition of patriotic organizations including:

VFW Post 4495, VFW Auxiliary, VFW Riders, American Legion Post 73,

American Legion Auxiliary, AmVets Post 29, Eagles and Eagles Auxiliary, WWII Veterans, Korean War Vets, Viet Nam Vets, Desert Storm Veterans, Bosnia Veterans, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Afghanistan Veterans, Survivors of Pearl Harbor, Navy Mothers Club, Gold Star Mothers, and Daughters of American Revolution.

The placing of wreaths will occur, followed by the introduction of the guest speaker. The Taylorville Municipal Band will play one more melody before the speaker, Richard Wiggins, sergeant in

the United States Marine Corps from 1966-1971, serving in Vietnam. Richard is a Purple Heart Recipient after being injured in the Quant Tri Province, RVN. He is the father of three children and has five grandchildren.

The event will wrap up with a Salute to the Dead by the Honor Guard that includes members of the American Legion Post 73 and VFW Post 4495, along with the Sergeant of the Guard, Roger Schroyer and benediction by VFW Post 4495 Chaplain Beverly Walker.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at the Taylorville VFW, where lunch is being served for all veterans and their families.

A drawing for a .44 Mag Henry Rifle will be held at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Lake Taylorville Veterans Point Memorial.
