Building Committee plans fieldhouse, auditorium

Breeze Courier TAYLORVILLE — At the

last Taylorville school board meeting, members voted to move ahead with the proposed scheme A to build a scaled-down field house and auditorium, as well as other features, after tearing down the east wing of the high school. They agreed to move to scheme D, a full field house and fine arts center, should fundraising provide the means to do so.

Though no decisions have been finalized, the building committee looked at schematic floor plans for a full scheme D at their meeting on May 25, 2022, with rough outlines of

what it would scale down to for scheme A if necessary.

Earlier that day, different faculty members and administration toured nearby school auditoriums and field houses, including at Rochester and Mt. Zion schools.

The full scheme D field house features three courts, two locker rooms (a male and a female), several restrooms (stall-style and family-style), offices, storage rooms, training rooms, a weight room and a wrestling room.

The full scheme D fine arts center features an auditorium (with an estimated 527 seats and a sizable stage), storage rooms, a shop, two dressing rooms, a choir room and a

band room renovation. Scheme D also included a

substantial lobby area with additional restrooms and storage, as well as a utility room and janitor closet. The new TommyTV suite would be built on the second level. Four classrooms, meant to be a living center to replace the special education rooms in the east wing, would be added to the science wing.

If moved down to scheme A, the field house would become two courts instead of three, the stage would become slightly smaller and the auditorium would lose some seating. The rough sketch estimates 431 seats in the sized-down auditorium, but the architects

are sure they could fit the desired 450 seats.

The school district is also pursuing a possible grant to include a storm shelter in the new build and looking at including solar panels on the roof.

The school would like to start demolition next spring. They plan on starting the special education rooms first and saving the band room renovation for last. Construction will likely take a full year.

The architects will have a more detailed pricing estimate for each building option before their next meeting on June 21, 2022 at 5:30 p.m.
