TAYLORVILLE — The Peter Meyer Chapter, NSDAR, met May 14 2022 at the Taylorville Public Library at 10:00 a.m. The program was “The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” and was given by Katie Fraley. The monument was established a century ago, and is located in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The guard takes 21 steps across one way and hesitates 21 seconds, then returns. The 21 eludes to the 21 gun salute at military funerals. His gloves are wet to prevent losing his grip on the rifle. They must meet a specific height and eight. The guard must commit to two years on the assignment. They have only been 400 to have served at the tomb so far. The Tomb has been continuously guarded since 1930, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
