CHRISTIAN COUNTY — Tuesday evening played host to the Highway, Buildings, Grounds, Environmental, Zoning and Welfare Committee meeting. Budgets, business and updates were the topic of discussion between the small group on the second floor of the Courthouse meeting room.
There were two Christian County residents to share public comments. Patty Rykhus brought to the boards attention the pack of dogs running wild in Pana. Jan Schmedeke wanted an update on a current project and Chairman Dale Livingston and the Committee were not able to give a definitive answer to either.
Committee member Chuck Smedley informed the committee of a parking lot that is causing some trouble in Moweaqua. Trespassers are tearing up the lot and a barrier is a need. Michael Specha formed the motion to recommend to the full Board to allow the purchase for concrete blocks not to exceed $2,500.
A motion to allow the City of Taylorville use of the Courthouse lawn for 4th of July festivities passed unanimously.
Zoning Business
Christian County Zoning Code 1-10-1 was discussed. The position of Zoning Administrator was explained to the members of the committee. The 2-year term limit was the big highlight of the discussion. The motion to send to the full Board for approval after discussion with the State’s Attorney carried 3-2. Chairman Livingston and Smedley both voted, “No.”
Immediately after, the Zoning Office location was tabled until next month since there is no rush to reach a decision.
Cliff Frye, County Highway Engineer, gave highway updates to the committee. They reached an agreement to send a project assignment to the full Board for further discussion.
Bill Kennedy gave several updates and business information regarding the Christian County Courthouse and tree removal. Kennedy mentioned the windows progression, the need for a new boiler in the near future and a leak in the roof that is in need of repair. Two trees on the Courthouse lawn are also in need of removal. The committee agreed on the motion to send to the Finance Committee to approve the removal of both trees through Loan Tree Service through means of Contingency Funds.
County Treasurer Betty Assmusen discussed and explained the Zoning Office budget. Using previous Zoning Officer Brett Rahr’s budget as a template. Since this fell under the “other matters” portion of the meeting, no actions were taken.
The motion to adjourn was passed at 7:50 p.m.
