TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville City Council met for the Mid-June meeting on Monday afternoon. Mayor Barry, City Attorney Romano and all but one Alderman heard out the Plan Commission, recognized a new Youth of the Month and promoted two members of the Taylorville Police Department.
Before the official meeting began the Plan Commission held a public hearing to discuss a rezoning request. The committee agreed to recommend to the board that they approve the motion to rezone the vacant property. The motion was presented by City Attorney Rocci Romano and was later approved during the City Council meeting.
Zach Braun was honored by the Council for his construction efforts with the Eagle Scouts. The project was handed to Zach in September 2021 by Don Farrimond. He was to construct an area dedicated to informing the public on the history of the Howitzer Connon. The memorial sign took more than twelve planning hours, over fifty-five man hours and a total of $2,500 spent. June 20, 2022 was designated as “Zach Braun Day” by Bruce Barry.
Two Taylorville Police Sergeants, Jeremy Alwerdt and Chase Dickey, were promoted and assumed the oath of office on Monday evening. The two were accompanied by family members and the TPD staff.
Taylorville Police Chief Wheeler recognized two members at the City Council meeting.
“You have been selected after a review and testing process with the Taylorville Police and Fire Commissioners. On 06-16-2022 they unanimously agreed on your promotion. You are now a leader in the police department which you must lead by example and mentor other officers. The challenges and decisions you will face will be very important ones that can affect the safety of others and the liability to the city. This is a very important role. We wish you once again a hearty congratulations on your promotion and all the very best for the future.”
Mayor Barry was authorized to sign on two orders from Dunn Company for Illini Drive improvements.
The Council appointed Deborah Kent to the Library Board.
Attorney Romano gave a short update through zoom which included….
Mayor Barry mentioned the Fourth of July festivities and several other topics in his update. The morning of will begin, like always, with the parade beginning at 10a.m. A hot dog lunch with the Mayor himself, ice cream provided by Bob Ridings and the firework show at the lake at dusk.
Alderman Steve Dorchinecz gave the Water/Environmental committee report. This included the purchase of a new UTG2 Locator for $5,431.10.
Larry Budd gave his Finance report. This included a controversial motion regarding the salary of Police Chief Wheeler, Deputy Chief Childers, Fire Chief Adermann and Assistant Fire Chief Hackney. The Motion was raise the Budget and Appropriations amount for the Police and Fire Administration salary. Budd explained he was going to vote against the motion and explained his stance.
“With the hard times everyone is facing I just cannot support increases in salary like this at this time.” Budd informed. The Motion passed 6-1.
Alderman Skultety gave the Ordinance Report which included direction of Attorney Romano to prepare an ordinance establishing solar permits and a Non-Bargaining Ordinance.
