TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Optimist Club held its regular meeting on Thursday, June 23, 2022, in the Community Room of the People’s Bank & Trust. President John Crist called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the opening prayer given by Ron Spears. Jim Adcock gave an update on the sponsorships raised for the funding of the annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Lake Taylorville. As this is the final year of a three year contract with the fireworks company, discussions will be held on plans for this celebration going forward.

The Optimist Jr. Golf Tournament just completed on June 15th was another success. The weather was hot and dry, but the players performed well. Participants consumed some 50 cases of bottled water in an effort to combat the heat and humidity. Winners will advance to the International Tournament in Doral, Fll., in late July.

Ron Mizer, VP of the Taylorville School Board, was the guest speaker for the morning. Ron gave a very informative presentation on the plans for a Fine Arts Center and expanded Sports Facility to be constructed on the site of the current East Gym area. The cost of the desired facility, with all the trimmings, is estimated to cost up to 18 million dollars. The District currently has 13 million available with plans being made to raise the additional funds through various fundraising ideas. If the total is not reached through the fundraising process, the addition will be scaled down to fit the budget.

An architectural firm from Quincy has been selected to design the future 450 seat auditorium and classrooms and athletic facilities. The timeline calls for approval of drawings in Dec. 2022; opening of bids in Jan/Feb of 2023; construction start in March of 2023; completion of project by the start of school in August of 2024. Ron noted that the funds on hand totaling 13 million dollars was available without having to borrow or finance future funding. The addition of some desired additions would come from the 5 million to be raised later.

The next meeting for the Optimist will be the second Thursday of July. The upcoming board meeting will be re-scheduled until that time. Visitors and guests are always welcome to attend any regular meetings. For more information, contact any club member or call 217-827-5978.
