TAYLORVILLE — The University of Illinois Extension forestry specialists are offering two forestry and natural resource programs in October.
– Oct. 13, Burning basis: an introduction to prescribed fire, 1 p.m. webinar. Webinar participants will gain overview of prescribed fire, including reasons to burn, burn plans, preparations, weather considerations, permits, training options, tools, risks, hazards and effects on vegetation and wildlife. The information provided will be a broad introduction so resources will be given for additional information, training opportunities and volunteering for those interested. – Oct. 14, Beginner chainsaw safety and forest stand improvement training, Dixon Springs Ag Center, Simpson, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration fee is $15. A hands-on, field training in safe use of chainsaws, safety gear to use, chainsaw cleaning and maintenance. Participants will have an opportunity to practice those skills with experts in this workshop. Participants need to wear long pants and sturdy boots. Personal protective equipment and chainsaws will be available, but participants may bring their own chainsaws and chaps, helmets and hearing and eye protection. Participants also need to bring a sack lunch.
