MATTOON — Abby Norris, Taylorville FFA member and Section 16 Vice President, attended the annual S.T.A.R (Section Team’s Activities and Responsibilities) Conference along with her fellow Section 16 officers and all section officers from District 4. The conference was held in Mattoon, IL, at Lake Land College on August 30th, 2022. This Conference is an activity put on by the Illinois Association FFA, which covers every angle for Section Officer Teams to develop action plans for their section. They went through a trial chapter visit to prepare the team for actual chapter visits they will assist their state officers with in October, coupled with many more lessons to prepare the officers for this coming year. All of the activities taught at the conference assisted in equipping them with goal-making skills, and the opportunity to plan their annual events such as Chapter Visits and Leadership Training School.
This conference is focused on team development, and as a result, helps strengthen agriculture, build communities, and grow leaders. Each individual section team was able to work together on multiple occasions, and strengthen their friendships and teamwork abilities with one another. Students attended sessions on mental, emotional, physical, and social growth. They also left this experience with a personal plan for agriculture education development. This event also included networking opportunities to meet other Section Officer Teams, and many other fun and engaging group activities.
FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. After returning home from, Norris states, “ I thought this was an amazing conference. Illinois Association FFA did a great job, and I feel much more prepared for all of the opportunities I will encounter this year as Vice President.” All of her fellow teammates feel the same, and cannot wait to help Section 16 FFA be the best that they can be.
