Rural Assumption accident claims 3 lives


(ASSUMPTION) — For the second time in a little more than a month, the Assumption vicinity has experienced another fatal accident. Illinois State Police (ISP) report three people were killed at a rural intersection, about 2 miles northwest of Assumption at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Back in August, two teens lost their lives and two other teens were severely injured when the car they were riding in was struck by a semi- tractor/trailer on U. S. Route 51.

According to the ISP, two people in a 2007 Freightliner grain truck and one person in a 2003 Buick LeSabre died as a result of the accident when they collided at the intersection of 1400N and 2500E Roads.

The report indicated the driver of the truck, 34-year-old Brian C. Callan of Blue Mound, was transported to Pana Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An autopsy will be conducted in Bloomington later today.

A passenger in the truck, Kirsty M. Hughes, 29, of Blue Mound and Sarah A. Myers, 36, of Bethany, a passenger in the car, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The identifications of the deceased was made by Christian County Coroner Amy Calvert-Winans on Tuesday morning.

The driver of the car has only been identified as a 34-year-old male by Illinois State Police.

State Police reported the impact of the crash caused the car to overturn and both people inside were ejected. The direction of each vehicle were not disclosed.
