TAYLORVILLE — St. Mary School honored veterans during an all school assembly on November 7. The Honor Guard from VFW #4495 led a flag raising ceremony, then the entire assembly recited the Pledge of Allegiance together. Principal Joanne Coady offered a special prayer for all veterans. Following the ceremony, Mrs. Schaeffer’s 6th grade students hosted a reception for the veterans in the school cafeteria. The students then read a portion of their essays, written under the direction of English teacher Amy Hughes. The essays had been submitted to the Patriots Pen contest, sponsored by the VFW. The students then had the opportunity to interview the veterans in attendance. For a follow-up activity, the 6th students will learn how to write a newspaper article based on the information they gathered from the veterans. From left are Chuck Schneider, Jett Morman, (2nd place winner in Patriots Pen Contest), Glen Goodrich, Rick Hobbs and Scott Campbell.
