TAYLORVILLE — Mr. James H. Smith, “The Music Man”, is celebrating his 93rd birthday today, February 24, 2023.
Many will remember Mr. Smith as one of Taylorville’s treasures as the long time music director at Taylorville High School, as well as the Taylorville Municipal Band.
Mr. Smith also founded the American Youth Band and Chorus (AYB/C) in 1963. The members of the band and chorus toured Europe presenting formal concerts. They served as ambassadors of music.
It was on one of many trips that Mr. Smith and the AYB/C group performed at a concert in Monte Carlo for Princess Grace. According to the “Official Travel Guide of the American Youth Band/Choir”, “The concert was the highlight of the tour, as Princess Grace and her aides attended and were obviously moved by everyone’s performance. Most of the personnel were somewhat apprehensive as this was the first time an American student band had been asked to perform for her Highness. Everyone was overwhelmed by her charm and graciousness when, following the concert, she personally invited all members of the AYB/C to attend that evening’s performance of the International Ballet.”
Long time friend, Mr. Jack Brown and wife Penny, said “Mr. Smith is just a treasure to our community. We are lucky to have him. The number of people he has influenced with his love of music is to be commended. Mr. Smith is a special person and we wish him the happiest of birthdays and hope that everyone else does, too.”
If you wish to send a birthday card to Mr. Smith, you may do so by sending to the Breeze-Courier, 212 S. Main St. Taylorville, IL 62568. We will make sure that Mr. Smith receives them.
