TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Optimist Club held its regular meeting on Thursday, March 23, 2023, in the Community Room of the People’s Bank. President Adam Vocks called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the morning prayer given by Pastor Steve Robinson. Special guests for the morning were Sophie Robinson, Anthony Revecco, and Drew Mickey from THS Tommy TV.
Sophie is the producer for the second Annual Tommy TV Awards scheduled for April 15. She reported that the inaugural program was a tremendous success with 198 in attendance. Tickets are currently sold out for this year’s event. This event required a budget of some $40,000, all raised by the students through fundraising and sponsorships from local businesses. A large number of students are involved with the production of the event while two other leaders of the program were in attendance. Anthony Revecco is a sophomore serving as the co-producer while Drew Mickey oversees sponsorships. If last year is any indication, this year’s program will be another huge success.
Rick Bryan, representing the Taylorville School Board, also spoke to the club on the status of the building project that is underway at THS. Rick reported that the bids for the project came in approximately 30% over the estimated cost of $18 million at $23 million. This will result in changes being made to the plans for the project to keep costs within the limit of $18 million. The original construction completion date was to be by the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, but that may well be re-evaluated going forward. Demolition of the East Wing will hopefully get started in the near future.
The club will be very active in the coming weeks. April 8th we will host the Southern Regional Oratorical Contest. April 9th, we will cooperate with the park district on the annual Easter egg hunt at Manners Park. May will see the annual Youth Appreciation Banquet, where seniors at THS will be recognized for their outstanding efforts throughout their time at THS. Also in May, the 8th Annual Salute to Law Enforcement will be held. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 Officer of the Year which will be announced at the breakfast. Keith Turney of the International Office of the Fraternal Order of Police will be the guest speaker.
As a reminder to the Board Members, out next meeting is Tuesday, March 28th in the meeting room of the People’s Bank. Visitors and potential new members are welcome at any regular meeting. Meeting are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 7:00 am in the bank. For more information contact any club member or call 217-827-5978.
