CHRISTIAN COUNTY — On Tuesday, March 14, the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Sub-Chapter #87 Retirees held their first meeting for the year at the Hillsboro Farm Bureau. There were 12 members in attendance. President David Spinner welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order.
Spinner asked the group to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Spinner asked everyone to devote a moment of silence for seven deceased Sub-Chapter members.
Spinner stated that the membership has increased by 5 to 721 as five new Retirees joined the Sub-Chapter.
President Spinner turned the meeting over to Guylia Grigsby for the speaker’s introduction. Grigsby introduced Brooke Lang, Licensed Massage Therapist, Neuromuscular Therapist, and Cosmetologist, who operates the Paradise Day Spa in Hillsboro. Grigsby, the recording secretary for the Sub-Chapter, was instrumental in acquiring Lang to speak for the meeting.
Lang started by giving everyone some of her background and prior history. She was a cosmetologist first. Then she went into Massage therapy and Neuromuscular therapy. Lang said Massage therapy manipulates clients’ soft tissues and joints of the body to treat and prevent dysfunction, injury, pain, and physical disorders and promotes general wellness. Massage therapy would help alleviate such issues as numbness, stress, and fatigue and help reset the nervous system.
Next, Lang told the group that Neuromuscular massage therapy is a specialized form of manual massage in which digital pressure and friction are used to release muscle strain areas. Strain areas are called tender or trigger points, and they tend to cause ongoing muscular pain symptoms. This therapy would help with circulation, nerve compression, postural problems, and repetitive movement injuries.
Lang mentioned that first, she starts at the scalp, then works down to the neck and onto the shoulders to evaluate and assess the patient’s distress level. She gave a fascinating description of her job as a Massage and Neuromuscular therapist. She stated that she could only physically treat four patients a day. However, having her cosmetologist license fills in the gaps. She has some 60 full-time patients, and getting an appointment might take a few weeks. Lang asked if anyone had any questions. One question was asked, “had she treated anyone for sciatica nerve problem”? She responded by saying yes. She commented that she had helped people with neck pain to relieve stress and fatigue. The group enjoyed Lang’s talk on how Massage therapy and Neuromuscular therapy might soon be an option for them.
The next meeting is a combined and Virtual ZOOM meeting in Taylorville on April 10, 2023, at the Taylorville Coal Museum building. The address is 1324 E Park Street in Taylorville. This is the Annual Election Meeting with speakers; Charles Martin, Director of Taylorville Coal Museum, and Book Autor Kevin Corley discussing his research on Christian County Coal Mines, both concerning the coal mine era in Christian County. A catered luncheon will be provided at Noon, with a meeting to follow at 1:00 pm. The Agenda includes the Election of Officers. In-person, attendance will be limited to 30 members. The next Hillsboro Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, at 1:00 pm at the Hillsboro Farm Bureau.
