(PANA) — The Pana Panthers softball team let a late-inning 5-2 lead evaporate on Tuesday afternoon at Tanner park and ended up losing to the visiting Cardinals of Warrensburg-Latham, 16-9.
Pana had a 5-2 lead going into the 5th inning, and then let Warrensburg back into the game where they tied it up, 7-7, at the end of seven. The Panthers then gave up 9 runs in the top of the 8th as the visitors took a 16-7 lead. Pana was able to get back 2 of those runs in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn’t enough.
The Panthers had a 16-hit attack in the contest. Joey Laker, Liv Anderson, Izzy Reed, Brianna Mathis and Bailey Evrley all had multiple hits. Mathis and Evrley both had the team high of 4 hits each. Laker, Reed and Mathis had RBIs with Reed and Laker leading the team with 3 apiece.
Shelby Ashcraft took the loss for Pana, giving up 12 hits and 6 walks, but sat down 11 by strikeout in her 7 innings pitched. Laker came in at the top of the 8th, giving up 2 hits and fanned 2.
Pana travels to Sullivan on Saturday for an 11:45 a.m. contest. Pana enters the non-conference game with an 11-11 record. On Monday, May 15, Pana travels to Paris for a regional tilt at 4:30 p.m. The winner advances to the Teutopolis Regional Tuesday afternoon, May 16, to face the number one seed, Effingham St. Anthony, also at 4:30 p.m.
