TAYLORVILLE — Taylorville High School three-sport athlete Will Turvey signed onto run Cross Country with Millikin University on Tuesday, May 9. Turvey has participated in the sport all throughout his tenure at THS and has already set lofty goals for his college career.
“For this next coming season, I’d like to be the fastest freshman on the Milikin team.” Will said during an interview on Tuesday afternoon. “That’s kind of one of my goals I’ve thought to myself. We will see what the future has in store. It’s going to be different.”
Turvey was one of the leaders on the strong Taylorville Cross Country team this season in 2022. He was the glue that held the boys together and helped them to a top 5 finish at the IHSA Class 2A Regional. He spoke highly about his time at Taylorville High School and just how it has helped shape him to be the person he is today.
“I had a great experience here running and playing basketball.” Will says. “I met some amazing people running and just so many people through the sport. A lot of my friends were made through this sport. It really has changed my life and my out look on life. The hard work it’s all thought me a lot not just about running but about everything.”
Turvey, of course, had to mention his coach, Steve Walters.
“I don’t even know where to begin.” He said. “Amazing coach. He’s taught me so much. I’m gonna miss him so much. All the runs, all the memories.”
Will Turvey has the rare ability to enjoy every second he is given which is something that helps him be so learned and teachable. He is excited to get to work as part of the Big Blue XC team and their Head Coach Andrew Craycraft.
“When I visited I really liked their team.” He adds. “The coach really knows his stuff and seems like a nice guy. He’s really turned that program around in recent years. I like the campus. I like everything about it. Millikin just seemed like a good fit for me.”
Every adult, coach and mentor in Will’s life have nothing but amazing words to say about him and usually all land on the same word, genuine. His work ethic and willingness to give his all will, no doubt, stay with him throughout his collegiate career and beyond.
