HILLSBORO — The Taylorville boys Tennis team traveled to Hillsboro High School on back to back days to challenge the St. Teresa Bulldogs on Tuesday, May 9 and Wednesday, May 10. Two Tornadoes were able to taste victory for the first time in their young tennis careers, Lucas Newton and Rain Ebert. Though they checked off a few boxes Taylorville fell to St. Teresa, 8-1 the final. Ebert continued his win streak on the second day at Hillsboro but THS dropped the match, 9-0
SINGLES
Lucas Newton gave the Taylorville boys their only varsity win of the meet when he defeated Jake Wayne 6-2 in both sets. Dylan Overhaug made sure his St. T opponent, Paul Candelwic, got to know his name. He played hard but fell in two sets; 6-3, 6-3. Taylorville’s Landon Molina fell 6-0 in both sets. Owen Busboom went scoreless in the first set, 6-0, but came right back only losing the second 6-2.
THS sophomore Rian Ebert gave the JV team two victories on Tuesday afternoon. His first he secured in an action packed match and took the victory, 8-6 the final. His second he was less forgiving defeating his opponent 8-1.
DOUBLES
Taylorville sent one and two hitters Landon Molina and Drake Overhaug out against St. Teresa’s best duo team. They pair fell in two sets; 6-2, 6-1. AJ Pickett and Tripp Pelichoff gave Taylorville their best doubles effort taking three sets to finally find a winner. They dropped the match; 4-6, 6-1 and 7-10. Lucas Newton and Owen Busboom came close in their match but couldn’t pull out a win; 7-5, 6-1.
WED, MAY 10
The Tornadoes were back at Hillsboro on Wednesday, May 10. For the singles portion, Ryan Ebert extended his JV win streak to 3 games when he defeated his ’Topper opponent 10-8. Landon Molina was close to securing his first victory of his career when he dropped his match 10-8. Lucas Newton was another that came close to another win. His match ended 10-8. AJ Pickett put up a fight and ended his match, 10-4 to Hillsboro.
The Tornadoes will be back on the tennis courts on when they go off to Effingham for the two day Apollo Conference tennis meet. The event will begin on 1:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
