(TAYLORVILLE) — A second candidate has emerged for the Republican nomination in March for Christian County Coroner. Both candidates declared within 24 hours of current Coroner Amy Calvert Winans announcement she would not seek re-election in 2024.
The second candidate is Austin Peters of Taylorville. He is a licensed funeral director with Sutton Funeral Home in Taylorville.
Peters made the announcement in a Facebook post as a letter to Christian County Residents.
“This letter is to announce my Republican candidacy for Christian County Coroner,” the letter began. “My name is Austin Peters, I am a lifelong resident of Taylorville, Ill. I graduated from Taylorville High School with the class of 2012 and Worsham College of Mortuary Science in September of 2014. I have served Taylorville and surrounding communities as a funeral director for the past eight years, as well as a deputy coroner for Christian County for the past nine years.”
He continued, “I have had the opportunity to work with many families during their time of need and I look forward to continuing that service. I have worked alongside local police departments, fire departments and EMS workers for several years and other local officials to prove my commitment and dedication to our community.”
Peters concluded his announcement with, “A few years ago, I was able to attend and complete the necessary 40 hour coroner certification through the Illinois Coroner’s and Medical Examiner’s Association. I strive to prove to the voters of Christian County that my dedication, hard work, and experience make me the best candidate for this position.”
