(CHARLESTON) — On Saturday, Nov. 4, three Pana High School choir students participated in the Illinois Music Education (ILMEA) District 5 Jazz Festival as part of the Vocal Jazz Choir. Seniors John Berns, center, Emma Stephens right and junior Gabby Heinrich, left, were selected through a rigorous audition process to sing in the 40-member choir with students from area schools. All three students enjoyed featured solos in their jazz charts. The singers were directed by University of Illinois doctoral candidate Alex Manfredo and accompanied by Paul Johnston, Professor of Jazz Studies at Eastern Illinois University. The concert was held at the Doudna Fine Arts Center on the Eastern Illinois University campus. John, Emma and Gabby will now be eligible to be selected for the ILMEA All-State Festival, held in January in Peoria. The students are directed by Mrs. Angela Chase, Pana Choir Teacher.
