CHRISTIAN COUNTY — Peter Meyer Chapter NSDAR met at the Historical Society on Thursday, Nov. 9.
The guest speaker was Teena Zendal-McWilliams, the Director of Institutional and Academic Planning at Richland College in Decatur. Professor McWilliams majored in English with a history minor. She loves biographies of our presidents, which lead her to the topic o James Garfield, Grover Cleveland, and Theodore Roosevelt.
The DAR learned uncommon facts about each. James Garfield was shot in the back and the treatment back in those days wasn’t favorable to recovery. Grover Cleveland had cancer. No one spoke about it for dear of being contagious or hereditary. He still served two non-consecutive terms. Theodore Roosevelt traveled with his sons along the Amazon River. Many people didn’t believe he went.
Professor McWilliams encouraged the DAR to read more about presidents and leaders.
