TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Optimist Club held its regular meeting on Thursday, February 08, 2024, at the American Eagle Restaurant. President Adam Vocks called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and Pastor Steve Robinson gave the morning prayer.
Adam reviewed the list of upcoming events for the club over the next several months. Those include:
Hosting the Southern Dist. Oratorical Contest
The annual Easter Egg hunt at Manners Park
The annual Youth Appreciation Banquet
Salute to Law Enforcement breakfast
Two new events on the calendar for 2024 include St. Jude Bike-a-Thon and the lunch honoring First Responders. May 11th has been selected as the date for the Bike-a-thon to raise funds for St. Jude Childrens Hospital. Forms will be distributed to area locations for riders to sign up and solicit sponsors to support them on their ride. More details will be forthcoming. Oct. 24th is the date selected for the Optimist club to join with the First United Methodist Church to host the first lunch honoring our First Responders. More details on this new event will also be forthcoming
Ron Spears was our guest speaker for Presidents’ Month. Ron, a well known authority on matters such as the US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Presidents Washington & Lincoln, and American history in general, conducted a type of trivia contest for the club. All the questions were related to issues about the presidents and facts of their terms in office, families, length of terms, etc. Most of the questions had to be answered by Ron, as many of the details were unknown to the club members present. Ron will continue to tell us about the history of our Republic at our next meeting on February 22.
