Joe A. Lawing

Joe A. Lawing, age 85, of Springfield, Ill. died early Friday, February 16, 2024 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield, Ill.
He was born October 20, 1938 in Howell Co. Missouri. son of the James and Pearl Collins Lawing.

He married Nancy Nelson on November 22, 1958 and later married Alice D. Brady on July 29, 1989 and she preceded him death.

Surviving are his children, Debra Ward (Troy) of Waverly, Ill., Barbara Lawing of Springfield, Ill., Pam Sullivan (Steve) of Chatham, Ill., David Brady of Springfield, Ill., Alice O’Keefe of Glenarm, Ill., and Jim Brady of Springfield, Ill.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Floyd Lawing, Ricky Lawing, and Imogene Ehrhart.

Joe worked for Kroger in Rockford, Ill. as a young man. He later worked for Commonwealth-Edison for over 30 years starting in Rockford, Ill. and transferring to the Kincaid Plant. He was an avid Cub fan who loved to garden. Joe loved to travel after he retired and when younger enjoyed fishing and camping. He also enjoyed horse and dog racing.

A Celebration of Life was held 10 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2024 at Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Waverly, Ill. Condolences may be sent to the family online at

    Debbie and Barbie, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was a good guy. We didn’t all meet until our move from Rockford to Taylorville but we quickly became friends because of our dads! You’re in my prayers.
