88th Pana Labor Day Parade Monday morning

(PANA) — The 88th Pana Labor Day Parade will begin at 10:00 a. m. on Monday, Sept. 5. The parade’s theme is “That’s Entertainment,” and organizers are looking forward to some new and entertaining entries in this year’s edition.

Grand Marshal of this year’s parade is Delta Theta Tau Sorority. The organization is being recognized for its 85 years of philanthropy to the Pana community.

The Parade will continue along its traditional route, beginning at the corner of Second and Poplar Streets heading west down Second Street. The Parade will end near the Chautauqua Pavilion in Kitchell Park. Several areas of downtown are fenced off due to construction and demolition. The pubic is encouraged to avoid these areas.

Staging begins as early as 8:00 a.m. (all floats must be lined up by 8:30 a.m. to be judged for best in show) and units participating in the parade are encouraged to report as follows:

– First Responders report to the corner of Second and Poplar Streets (East)

– Pana High School marching band and sports units report to the alley east of Walgreens.

– Pageant Queens and Participants report to the alley east of Dollar General.

– Visiting marching bands report to the corner of Second and Kitchell Streets (North).

– Floats report to the corner of Second and Kitchell Streets (South).

– Charities report to the alley east of Carnegie- Schulyer Library (South)

– Antique automobiles and tractors report to the corner of Second and Maple Streets (North).

– Politicians report to the corner of Second and Maple Streets (South).

– Shriners report to the corner of Second and Maple Streets (South).

– Labor unions and representatives report to the corner of Second and Maple Streets (South).

– Commercial businesses and vehicles report to the corner of Second and Vine Streets.

The Parade Committee encourages participants to distribute candy. However, there are a couple of safety rules which need to be followed, otherwise the participant may be asked to leave the parade route.

Do not throw candy from any vehicle, whether moving or standing still. Candy should only be distributed by people walking along the curb of each street.

The Pana Labor Day Parade Horse Show will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 5 at the former Wallace Brothers Stables off Cold Springs Road, just west of U. S. Highway 51. There will be four classes available, for which awards and prizes will be issued: Pony, Parade/ Costume, Western and Hitch.

There will also be awards for the Oldest and Youngest Riders. Following the show and award presentations, the riders and horses will caravan into town to east
