The Taylorville Tornadoes pulled off the nightcap as they rattled off a huge win in Charleston on Friday evening, Dec. 12, as the Tornadoes beat the Trojans 50-30 courtesy of a big all around game from Patrick Curtin. The Tornadoes got the scoring right away with Brock Brown who got off to a quick game with 7 points alone in the first quarter, as Taylorville controlled the time of possession. Charleston tried numerous fast breaks, but the strong defensive efforts from Patrick Curtin and Malique Pearse gave the Trojans fits. Taylorville led 14-5 at the end of the first.
The Trojans threw their best punch at the Tornadoes in the second as Senior Tyler Oakley poured in seven points including 3 free throws as Charleston cut into the deficit even getting within four but Blake Ladage and Patrick Curtin continued to play solid defense along with adding some points as Taylorville took a 22-16 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
Once again, it would be the third quarter where Taylorville would shine. Taylorville would get 7 points from Brock Brown including a big 3, Curtin would add 4, Maddyx Owens, would add 4 as well and Taylorville outscored, out rebounded, and outshined 15-8 despite a Trojan Braxton Hanner 3 pointer. Taylorville went into the fourth quarter up 37-24.
The fourth quarter would see Taylorville drag on purpose and hold the ball a little more as they tried to consume the clock, and despite a 3 pointer from All Conference Tyler Oakley, the Tornadoes would outscore the Trojans 13-6 in the fourth and pick up their second win of the season.
Coach Ryan Brown praised the defensive efforts of Taylorville on Friday night, complimenting the team on a job well done in keeping Oakley to just 15 points. The senior scored half of Charleston’s points. “Brock Brown spent most of the night guarding Oakley and it was good to see him take care of business,” Coach Brown said.
Taylorville improves to 2-3 while Charleston falls to 2-6. The Tornadoes were supposed to take on Jersey on Saturday afternoon, but the game was suspended due to snow. Taylorville will take on Mattoon in another girls boys double header on Friday evening, Dec. 19.
